Nyonya Delight – Homestyle Nyonya Food
It should be possible to get around the “downtown” of Melaka by hopping from one Nyonya Restaurant to the next, or at least, they are all within throwing distance of one another. You are spoilt for choice.
But this one is special.
Thanks to a friend on the Dayre App, I was introduced to this fascinating place, on the outskirts of Melaka :
Its located in Klebang, which is about 20 minutes drive from the heart of Malacca, and it was totally worth the trip. It felt like I had long-lost relatives in Melaka, and had gone to their home for lunch.
The Dishes
We are talking all my favourites, a look at their hand-written menu makes my heart race – there is something about it that says “pride”.
And happy indeed I was!
Laksa!
Laksa for me, is not about the heat. It is about a beautiful, rich spicy broth, fragrant with aromatic spices, rich with the creaminess of coconut milk. The piquant notes of laksa leaves, the tofu puffs steeped and infused with the rich broth. I want to eat this. Again ….
And again. At RM5, I think its worth my three hour drive to Melaka from Singapore!
Nasi Lemak, Rendang Chicken
Delicious! The rice was out of this world, every element, the rich, aromatic chilli, and those oh so delicious Ikan Billies!
The Nasi Lemak set was RM 2.5o. And of course I added Chicken Rendang at RM4. And oh…..
Rendang, like Laksa, it is not about heat. Its about richness!
And I can’t get enough of that rich, aromatic rendang, so rich with the most beautiful flavours in the world! Lemon grass, dried chickens, shallots… and so much more!
Nyonya Chang
(This is likely a special, not a regular item) Is that beautiful?
Yes, it is beautiful! The filling!
I could say a lot about it, tender, beautifully seasoned, but Delicious(!) will suffice. Pack a few back to SG. Just a few. They don’t make many. Leave the good stuff for the locals!
Cendol
Cendol is about the Gula Melaka, but I have a low tolerance for sweets, so I was a little worried when I asked Charles to tone down the Gula a bit. He might take offence.
But he didn’t mind. And, yes, its a beauty.
There can’t be a better way to end the meal.
Getting there
They have their GPS coordinates (N2.221507, E102.181860) on their Facebook page, and they are on Google Maps:
I suggest you use the GPS Coordinates (street addresses just don’t work), and drive slowly along Jalan Klebang Besar. If you are driving away from Melaka, they are on the right, look out for this :
Yup. That’s them. It also helps to know that they are right opposite Bert’s Seafood Garden (which has a large signboard).
And you will be welcome!
