From the Robata : Hokkaido Scallop with Onion Butter Sauce, Atka Mackerel, Kagoshima Wagyu with garlic soya, Kurobata Tsukune, ending with hot Soba. From the Teppan : King Prawn with special golden sauce, Marinated Cod, Beef Tenderloin with Garlic Soya, ending with fried rice. Lots of sake. A lunch that left me happy, and longing to curl up in the sun like one of my cats.
We tried both the Robata, and the Teppan Set Lunch at Mikuni, at the Fairmount Hotel. When possible, I try always to sit at the counter, I enjoy it more, and I image it’s easier on the staff. I like to be close to my food!
From the Teppan set, the king prawn with golden sauce was most memorable. I wish I could tell you what the sauce is, but I can’t. Creamy and luxurious, I imagine the heads of the prawns are involved, in a mayonnaise base. I didn’t bother asking the chef. This was served with cod that is marinated for 4 hours in soya, and interestingly, fried using the metal weight you see in the background.
From the Robata, the star was the grilled corn, wagyu and pork. Need I say more? I always loved corn. But then I discovered Hokkaido corn some time back. And since then, corn has taken on a different meaning for me. A pork tsukune? Why not? There is something deeply seductive about grilled minced meat dipped in raw yolk. Whoever dreamt that up is a genius.
And from the Robata, scallop, swimming in a mix of its own sweet juices and a rich onion butter sauce.
Fried Japanese rice – I was inspired to try my own!
Hot soba in a delicious broth, with a fillet of herring, spring onions. Something I will not attempt to replicate. A prefect end.
Verdict : Well worth it for lunch!
Details :
Both sets were $68 before service and tax.
