Popiah. With fried pork lard inside. Yup! And everything else in that popiah is lovely!
I am a great believer in cooking my own food, but this is Popiah is one dish I will gladly pay for. There are only a few places that do good skin, and the ingredients are a nightmare to assemble. And this little place along Jalan Ong Kim Wee in Melaka, is a gem.
A great popiah is many wondrous things rolled into a fabulous contrast of colours, textures, and tastes. The stewed jicama, the egg (fried in this case), the crunchy fresh vegetables, prawn paste, chilli and in this case, fried pork lard! The balance at Ta Chong is just prefect for me. The jicama is stewed a little on the dark side, and it was full of lovely flavours.
It’s easy to miss the place, but at least its on google maps (search “Ta Chong Popiah”.) You will see this red sign and the friendly lady boss.
And yup, she is a very loving and possible person, so do not give her any negative bullshit!
