I love my chicken rice. I dream of the stuff. It’s a simple dish, and its always the simple dishes that demand the greatest dedication and attention to detail. There are those few famous stalls with rave reviews and long queues. And there are many lesser know ones, hidden away in corners, quietly delivering culinary heaven to their own group of loyal fans. Ah Boy at Yew Tee is one of the latter.
As good as it gets!

The stall is located at the V6 Food Court at Yew Tee (more a kopi tiam, actually), north of Choa Chu Kang. It’s run by two brothers, one of their wives, and some helpers. I have been eating there a long time, and they have been remarkably, and consistently delicious. They specialize in roast chicken, not the poached. Don’t let this bias you. Some famous stalls insist on selling only the poached version, insisting it is results in superior tenderness and moistness. But roast chicken rice, is I think, an art unto itself. Ah Boy gives the best of both worlds.

Roast chicken is judged by its skin. And their roast chicken skin is paper thin, crispy and totally delicious. Under that crispy skin, is moist, tender chicken meat. Think the tenderness of poached chicken, with the bonus of crispy skin.
Roast Chicken – crispy skin!

The breast meat here is as tender as the leg meat. Perhaps you can see the tenderness of the breast meat in these photos. When I bite into one of these pieces, I think sous vide! Plate a few pieces of this chicken breast nicely, with a fancy sauce and some garnish, and you have a restaurant quality dish!
Tender chicken breast, just cooked through

The rice is rich, oily, and with just the right fluff. They have the most beautiful eggs. The chilli is great and they serve thick, rich dark soya sauce.
The soup at a chicken rice stall is often an afterthought. But here, they go the extra mile. They rotate through a variety of light, but delicious soups. The common ones are lotus root, salted or Szechun vegetables, a watercress soup, or in the case, peanut.
Light but delicious – peanut soup

Located as they are in a nondescript kopi tiam, its easy to pass by this stall. But stop for lunch, and you will likely walk away happy.
Stop for lunch, don’t just walk by. The lady boss takes time for a moment with her daughter
